Posted on Tripadvisor Martina MartinaVerified A great memorable experience with Mambo Gorilla Safari Mambo Gorilla Safari went over expectations! Didan is really a gentle heart and always trying to feel us better and amazed by Uganda surroundings. We enjoyed so much both the Gorilla safari (incredible!), the stay on Lake Bunyonyi was chilling and peaceful, and safari (both by Didan car and by boat) were stunning. Didan always explained the best options in such a kind and a heart loving Uganda way: we trusted him and we really had the best experiences we neither haven't imaged at departure.Posted on Tripadvisor Simone VVerified BIG FIVE🤗🙌 SAFARI REVIEW1. Tg. It was a very nice exhausting animal day at the gorillas. Impressive to be so close to the animals after a long hike through the jungle. Over bumpy slopes we continued into the Queen Elisabeth Park to the north. At night we had leopard hippo antelopes on the way.2. Tg. in the savannah it was more exciting than ever...Even the mood in the morning or evening was enough to feel comfortable lions buffalo elephants antelopes.... They joined in. Our boat tour was very pleasant accompanied by stories about Queen Elisabeth Park and the animals... especially the hippos fascinated me with their cosiness which gives you so much peace.3. Day in the Forest.... Visit to the chimpanzees was for me the soundscape very exciting and exciting and when the monkeys then swing from tree to tree you hold your breath.4. Tg. In the morning we continue to the Murchison Falls NP long ride and it gets much hotter...35..37 degrees. The accommodation is very very nice (like all the others) we fall exhausted to bed and continue to sweat.5. Tg. The game drive through the park opens up other views and I am most pleased with the morning awakening mood. By the way, antelopes, buffaloes, elephants, warthogs and giraffes. After lunch it goes on the boat and there they are again the relaxed hippos also crocodiles show themselves and many birds ... seeing the waterfalls from afar, they really only impress "on the top" gigantic! Refreshing the prospects and so they gave me "new" life for the evening. I was already a little exhausted.6. Tg. Getting up early again...not hard. Long drive to Kampala. With a short visit to the rhinoceros reserve. The tour was not quite so demanding .... but the animals were enormous. So I have to take this point to say thank you again to the organisers. They were great wonderful safari days. 😍👍Posted on Tripadvisor Maxi VVerified A wonderful experience in Uganda... We were travelling with Didan & Charity in a small group. It was a wonderful time and we have fond memories. Firstly, we went to Bwindi National Park and were able to experience the impressive mountain gorillas up close for an hour. We then travelled by safari jeep to Queen-Elisabeth National Park and were lucky enough to see two leopards at the side of the road in the dark 🤩The 2 days in Queens Elisabeth National Park were filled with many animal attractions such as lions, elephants, waterbucks, hippos and crocodiles. Another highlight were the chimpanzees in Kalinzu Forest. It's worth organising your safari tour with Mambo Gorilla. Diana makes every effort to ensure that everything runs smoothly, is very knowledgeable and has many contacts.Posted on Tripadvisor CharBar98Verified Mambo Gorilla Safari - highly recommended! My family and I went on the three-day gorilla tour with Mambo Gorilla Safaris in August 2024, and it turned out to be one of the most unforgettable holidays we've ever had!Didan, who was our amazing tour operator (and one of the owners of this family-run business), made everything so easy. I had only booked the trip a month before and had tons of questions, but Didan was always available on WhatsApp, offering great advice and helping us figure things out, especially with the Monkeypox situation in Rwanda/Uganda at the time. He even offered to reschedule or cancel the trip, but since our flights were non-refundable, we stuck with our original plan—and we're so glad we did!Our driver, Hillary, picked us up at the airport and took us to the Kigali Genocide Museum, which was a deeply moving experience in itself. From there, we crossed the border into Uganda to stay at Lake Bunyonyi. Hillary was so friendly and knowledgeable, answering all our questions about both Rwanda and Uganda along the way.At Lake Bunyonyi, we were the only guests due to many cancellations because of Monkeypox. But the staff, led by Charity, made us feel incredibly welcome, taking care of us in every way. We went with the most budget-friendly accommodation, so the rooms weren't the most modern rooms we've stayed in but everything was clean and organised. Didan also mentioned that they're building a new lodge near the forest, which I’m sure will be amazing! The highlight of our trip was, of course, the gorilla trek. After a 3.5-hour hike through the stunning Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, we had an extraordinary experience. The Monkeypox cancellations actually worked in our favour, as it was just my family in our group with the ranger, trackers, and porter, alone with the gorillas. It was surreal! The gorillas came so close, even nudging my brother on two different occasions. Keep in mind that the trek itself is not for the faint-hearted, as you're hiking up and down 50-60 degree inclines - however, we were told it's also dependent on where you enter, where the gorillas are etc.I can’t put into words how incredible this experience was. Seeing the gorillas has been a dream for our family for years, and we’re so happy we went for it. Mambo Gorilla Safaris made the whole trip extra special with their friendly, professional service. A huge thanks to Didan, Charity, Hillary, and their team for making this trip one of our best memories ever! I highly recommend Mambo Gorilla Safaris to anyone thinking about visiting the mountain gorillas.Posted on Tripadvisor Michael MVerified Mambo Gorilla Safaris Uganda : A Journey Beyond Expectations In mid-January 2024, I embarked on the 10-Day Safari Tour with Mambo Gorilla Safaris Uganda, an experience that proved to be nothing short of extraordinary. Being a photographer, my primary goal was to document the intimate behaviors of the animals we encountered as we journeyed through some of Uganda’s iconic National Parks. I also had a keen interest in capturing captivating landscapes and street scenes across the western part of Uganda.Every detail of our customized itinerary was meticulously planned and executed, surpassing all expectations. Communication throughout the planning process was seamless and timely, conducted via email and the WhatsApp messaging app. Didan provided excellent feedback on our initial tour ideas, covering a variety of experiences and visits to several of Uganda’s national parks. It was evident that we had chosen an outfitter familiar not only with the needs of photographers but also possessing significant on-the-ground experience and necessary business connections to execute all aspects of our challenging custom itinerary. Didan was highly receptive to our requirements, offering insights and suggestions that facilitated a quick agreement on the itinerary and a reasonable price. A word of caution: for those unfamiliar with tours requiring payment of the remaining balance in US currency upon arrival, it's advisable to check with your outfitter about any specific requirements. Some countries' banks only accept newer minted US currency and older denominations may be refused despite being perfectly valid in the US.Upon arrival at Entebbe International Airport, Didan greeted us warmly, assisting with our luggage and transporting us to our accommodations in Entebbe. He provided a high-level plan for the following day and discussed the possibility of a tour of Lake Victoria, specifically the Mabamba Swamp. After a successful tour of the Mabamba Swamp, where I had the opportunity to photograph the elusive Shoebill Stork, we had lunch and were then driven to our hotel where we met our driver/guide, Yonah, who would accompany us throughout our journey. For those seeking adventure, cultural immersion, and the chance to explore the wildlife in Uganda's iconic National Parks, including encounters with gorillas, chimpanzees, and golden monkeys in their natural habitats, Mambo Gorilla Safaris Uganda is the ultimate choice. The highlights of this trip undoubtedly revolved around the tracking experiences, particularly gorilla habituation. The thrill of tracking gorilla families through dense forests was matched only by the awe of standing face-to-face with these gentle giants. Their expressive eyes and intricate social dynamics left me humbled and inspired. Imagine being in the presence of these majestic creatures as they go about their daily lives. We spent hours observing their behavior, from playful interactions to serene moments of contemplation. The guides for each experience were knowledgeable and forthcoming with information on their primate charges, ensuring a respectful distance to witness their natural habitat without disturbing them. Our driver and guide, Yonah, safely navigated us over 1200 km of some of the roughest roads we had ever encountered. Yonah's expertise within the parks translated into amazing safari viewing opportunities, allowing us to photograph Uganda's wildlife in its natural environments. He ensured we arrived at designated tracking centers on time and that all reservations and paperwork were in order. Yonah also ensured our vehicle was cleaned, dust-free, and in perfect mechanical working order before each day's travels. It was evident that Mambo Gorilla Safaris Uganda collaborates with local communities, creating a positive impact beyond tourism. Our accommodations, located near the various National Parks we visited, provided a comfortable respite from the day-to-day rigors of traveling throughout Western Ugandan National Parks. Staff at each lodge greeted us personally upon arrival, and all accommodations were comfortable and clean, with cozy beds and ample hot water. Internet service was usually available in common areas, including dining areas, and each lodge had a relaxed atmosphere with personable staff. There was a wide selection of local dishes catering to both non-vegetarian and vegetarian preferences, along with choices of local beers. In summary, Mambo Gorilla Safaris Uganda offers more than just a tour; it provides a gateway to Uganda's soul. For those seeking adventure, cultural immersion, and the opportunity to witness gorillas and golden monkeys in their natural habitat, look no further. Mambo Gorilla Safaris Uganda delivers an experience that exceeds expectations.Posted on Tripadvisor Guide08525158855Verified Friendly, accommodating, experienced, communication, and informative This opportunity was on our minds for a very long time. Finally in Jan2024 we were able to pull the trigger and make the trip happen. Called it the 'primates tour' where. we wanted to see the golden monkeys/chimps/and most importantly gorillas. We also wanted to get some game drives and take in some of the local sights and scenery. After some research of various fitters we found Mambo Safaris as a highly rated company. Since it was just 2 of us, we got in touch with Mambo where Didan and Nicholas were extremely helpful. We wanted to make some subtle adjustments and tailor the trip to our needs.I cannot express how amazing the experience was. Starting from the pickup past midnight to our lovely accommodation in the Airport Guest Lounge all the way to the airport drop off on day 9, the entire trip went without any interruptions or hitches. I credit the entire team from Mambo for allowing us to enjoy the trip, offering us very valuable feedback and information to make the plans fully successful. Even when unplanned events did happen, we were able to pivot and maximize our times and experience. I would like to especially thank Twinomuhangi Yonah for his outstanding company and driving throughout the entire trip. He was very entertaining and sharing a lot of the local knowledge which we were very thankful for. Just a warning for anyone reading. If you are planning on paying US cash, make sure they are not marked and newer than 2018. In closing, Mambo is an EXCELLENT choice for anyone travelling to UGANDA and looking into taking in the wildlife tours. The lodgings were amazing as well, even though we opted for the budget. Thank you Mambo team for all your help and guidance throughout out stay. All the very best!!Posted on Tripadvisor Matt LVerified Incredible tour of Uganda packed into 2-days I was staying in Kigali by myself while working and wanted to go gorilla trekking. Gorilla trekking in Rwanda can be very expensive. Thankfully, Didan was able to put together a 2-day gorilla trekking package at a very affordable price in Uganda. My guide for the tour, Stuart, was fantastic. He was born in the area right around Lake Bunyonyi and Bwindi Impenetrable Forest. This meant that he had all kinds of knowledge about both Uganda and Rwanda. He also knows almost everybody living in that area. Super personable and he even took me to see some football matches in his hometown after the trekking.Day 1 we left from my hotel in Kigali. We then drove to Bunyonyi View Resort on Lake Bunyonyi. This area was extremely peaceful and a great place to spend the night before trekking. My host, Charity, was incredible and took great care of me.Day 2 we drove to Bwindi in the morning for the trekking. After about two hours of trekking, we found a family of gorillas. In my opinion gorilla trekking is a must-do activity for anybody visiting East Africa. Hacking through the rainforest to observe these gorillas in their natural habitat is a truly unique experience. After trekking, we returned back to Kigali. If you are interested in any sort of tour of Uganda, I can highly recommend Mambo Gorilla Safari and Stuart .Great experience and I wish I had more time to explore Uganda!Posted on Tripadvisor Sharon HVerified Sensational trip Didan was impeccible. He set up my trip from the UK. Arranged for a driver to take me from Entebbe to Biwindi. His lodge on the lake was beautiful and so were the staff. Absolutely incredible experience and amazing people all the way. I highly rate this company book with them.Posted on Tripadvisor MexKnoxVerified Cannot recommend. Gorilla trekking not official but with a bribed guard. The tour went ok. While tour was in a Landrover, it was not well maintained. Twice the car would not start until fixed a few days later, ran out of gas since dashboard was not working so never knew how much gas we had or how fast we were going. Africa is not a place you want a car to breakdown. Luckily always near a town and we tipped them to help us out. He tried to change the originally quoted hotels on me, most where for a lower quality but when pressed he changed back. I was in low season so no issue with availability. The biggest issue I had was on the gorilla trekking. The night before he called me to say needed to wake up and hour earlier cause gorillas had moved. I said we stayed in this hotel since it was 10 mins from the Buhoma gate. He said please wake earlier, so I did. One of the owners picked me up, not my usual guide we drove for about an hour. Then parked on side of road, where a Ugandan guard came out of the forest I followed him alone, not sure what was going on and did see gorillas for an hour by myself. This was clearly a bribe for the guard and much lower cost for the operator. For all gorilla treks you usually meet with the group at an official entrance show passport get signed in and and divided into groups, as well as a short talk. This operator clearly did not pay for a gorilla permit. Tour operator and guard pocketed the money not Uganda Parks.Posted on Tripadvisor Ivan PVerified Experience This trip I am did like solo traveler. FAQs
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) About Gorilla Trekking
What is Gorilla Trekking?
Gorilla trekking involves hiking and walking in dense forests in search of the rare great apes. This thrilling activity is led by a well-trained ranger guide who ensures both your safety and the conservation of the gorillas. It often involves physically challenging conditions, such as steep climbs, muddy and slippery ground, and encounters with stinging nettles and insects. Despite these challenges, the reward of seeing mountain gorillas up close makes every effort worthwhile.
When is the Best Time to Trek Gorillas in Rwanda and Uganda?
The best time to embark on a gorilla trekking adventure in either Rwanda or Uganda is during the dry seasons. These typically span from June to September and December to February. During these periods, the weather conditions are more favorable for trekking, with less likelihood of rain making the paths less slippery and the experience more enjoyable.
How Much is a Gorilla Permit in Uganda or Rwanda?
A gorilla permit is required to participate in gorilla trekking. The cost varies depending on the country:
– In Uganda, a gorilla permit costs around $800 per person.
– In Rwanda, the cost is higher at approximately $1,500 per person.
These fees contribute to the conservation efforts and the protection of these endangered species.
What to Pack for a Gorilla Trekking Trip
Packing appropriately is crucial for a successful trekking experience. Here’s a list of essentials:
– **Sturdy Hiking Boots:** Necessary for navigating the rugged terrain.
– **Rain Jacket:** Weather in the rainforest can be unpredictable.
– **Insect Repellent:** To protect against bites.
– **Long-Sleeved Shirts and Trousers:** These help protect your skin from nettles and insects.
– **Snacks and Water:** To keep your energy levels up during the trek.
How Long Does a Gorilla Trek in Uganda or Rwanda Take?
Typically, a gorilla trek can last anywhere from 2 to 8 hours, depending on the location of the gorilla families and the difficulty of the terrain. Your guides will lead you to the gorillas and allow you to spend about an hour observing them in their natural environment.
What Are the Chances of Seeing a Mountain Gorilla?
The chances of seeing mountain gorillas are remarkably high, with success rates as notable as 99% in Uganda due to the efficient organization of trekking operations. Guides and trackers have years of experience and extensive knowledge of the gorillas’ movements.
What is the Age Limit for Gorilla Tracking?
The minimum age limit for gorilla tracking is 15 years old. This age restriction is in place to ensure the safety of both the trekkers and the gorillas.
When Should You Book a Gorilla Permit?
Due to the high demand, it is advisable to book your gorilla permit several months in advance, especially if you plan to trek during the peak seasons. By doing so, you secure your spot and ensure a well-organized experience.
Gorilla trekking is indeed a uniquely rewarding adventure, offering unforgettable interactions with one of the world’s most extraordinary creatures. To maximize your experience, make sure to prepare adequately, respect the guidelines, and fully immerse yourself in the wonder of nature.
